Big Room Cave Watershed Clean-up 2-12

Postby graveleye » Feb 8, 2011 9:36 am

Just a reminder that the SKTF and Sewanee Mountain Grotto are having a clean-up at Big Room Cave in central Tennessee this Saturday, 2-12-11.

This from the SKTF website:

Don't forget to mark your calendars for the Big Room Watershed clean up on January 8 February 12, 2011. This has the makings of a great clean up event and with Big Room Cave right there, you can go caving when we are done!!

Volunteers will meet at Big Room Cave at 10:00 to begin what may be a massive clean up. We are really not sure how deep the sink hole is, but we do know it is filled to the top. Local residents say that in the past the water running in the sinkhole would flush the trash down stream. There may be a large undiscovered cave here. This may be like Horseshoe Bend Cave. That small cave turned into a 1 mile long cave with significant vertical elevation once the trash was removed and access to the rest of the cave was gained!!

Kelly, feel free to add whatever further information you have here.

Cleanup starts at 10am (Central) and this is a Kid Friendly cleanup. The Sewanee Mountain Grotto will be providing Pizza for lunch during the cleanup. See pictures below of the trash in the sinkhole.

Great job today!!! The sinkhole is beginning to look more like a sinkhole today.
Sure doesn't look a thing like the pictures above now.
Still lots to be done though. I can't wait for the next round.

Yes that is great news! Thanks to the SKTF, Sewanee Mountain Grotto, and all the individuals who made this cleanup possible! Perhaps there will be some "after" photos posted?
