Dan,
You bring up a good point, and one I am not familiar with. Coming from Missouri, where the density of caves are off the chart, I have been spoiled. I know that the areas from about Southern Mo over to eastern KY/TN are loaded with caves. While in MO, I was training with a guy who commonly went into lechuguilla (near Carlsbad, NM). He built me an amazing rope walker, and I would likely have gone on a trip with him to letch had I not moved away for a job (wish I had not moved). I only know of a few scattered caves in the area of South TX over to Cali. I am not aware of the density of caves in your area or the entire region. How does the density compare?
I noticed the NSS convention is in your area. So your grottos are active with lots of members? What age range? (I am 44).
Thanks - Paul
