2010 Members Manual

Postby Larry E. Matthews » Nov 29, 2010 8:42 pm

I just got my 2010 Members Manual in the mail today and it looks great and is well done. But, I have a couple of questions:

1. Is there a caption for the photo on the Back Cover? I couldn't find it. What cave is it, who took the photo, and who is that in the photo? That is a really nice photo !

2. The front cover shows some really interesting blue coloration on the ceiling. Does anybody know what that blue stuff is? This is Blue Spring Cave and there are several occurances of celestite. Is this another one? Or, is it something else?

Larry, I think the digital image on the front is not Celestite at all. Rather, a mismatch of color balance on within the camera. The other theory is it may be a coating of calcite?

The data you need is in the letter from the editor. It's the paragraph on the right of the same page as the front cover credit. It's probably the wrong way to display that. It's kinda camouflaged there but the credit is given where credit is due.

Thank you. Good start.

But, since I didn't know Chip Clark, is that him in the photo? And, what cave is he in? Even the date and year would be nice to know, too.

Inquiring minds want to know !!!

I had a hard hat exactly like that, but lost it in the Great Flood here on May 2.

You could look him up in the Members Manual. :tonguecheek:

And, anyone that doesn't like something about the MM and thinks they could do better... I'm sure that could be arranged.

Hey Scott,

I think they said he is deceased. So, that won't work.

I don't think anybody was complaining about the Member Manual. I started this thread by saying how nice the Members Manual was, but was just trying to get more information on that one photo.

I'd still like to know what cave that is, just out of curiosity.

Meredith Hall Weberg did a wonderful job and we all appreciate it.

Chip died earlier this year. He was a photographer at the Smithsonian for many years.

I still like the back photo over the front but that is my opinion. I agree the photo credits are somewhat camoflaged and maybe lacking in detail but, yes they are there. I did notice a decrease in membership pages from 2008 - 2010 minus about fifteen. I suppose its a sign of the times as I see less and less younger people not taking an interest in the outdoors...plus WNS is not helping regardless of how you think we should proceed.

Hey! I'm a young person (turning only 24 in 2 weeks!) and I just started caving this past June in an area where there are no caves! 6 hr drive to the closest one! And I joined the NSS! Yet I've still manged to be up into the 20's for the number of cave trips I've been on and that includes FIVE countries! (US, Canada, England, Wales, Scotland! Well ok Scotland was a mine.) :D And I want to move down towards TAG next Spring because stuff to do outdoors in Michigan is crappy unless you love snow and winter. Well you can hike. We have some "metroparks" and stuff. And up north is pretty if you want to drive 6 hours up there. But yeah, pretty lame overall as far as outdoors stuffs go. I can't stand it.
