Richard R. put this on my Facebook page:

The Carlsbad Current-Argus newspaper has an article about the quake, which didn't cause any damage in town. However, a post to the article from "Junie" in Carlsbad was interesting. She wrote: "I have family on a ranch 8 miles sw of Brantley. Knocked pictures of the walls, collapsed a sink hole and huge gash in the pasture. WOW."

How strong of an earthquake does it take to leave a mark on the geological record? We can tell when there were major earthquakes in history by looking at the shifts in layers of rock and soil - but earthquakes happen all the time, mostly small. So how strong must an earthquake be before it leaves noticeable geological evidence?

I'm not sure, but I think there is an expedition in the Far East branch of Lechuguilla this week. It will be interesting to hear if they noticed anything.

I missed this topic when it was first posted in March 2010, but just saw it today when it was revived. I think you might have missed the date of the earthquake Andy. When this earthquake happened on March 27th , 2010 I was surveying in a large cave passage in the Guadalupe Mountains. At 6:04 pm we heard a low rumbling noise that built in intensity and then diminished over a period of 20-30 seconds. I had been in caves during earthquakes in caves before, so I immediately knew what was happening. We weren’t able to feel movement, but the noise was quite noticeable and disconcerting. I have previously been in two earthquakes in Wind Cave, one in Jewel Cave and one in Dry Cave and this one was the loudest that I have experienced. The epicenter is located in the Indian Basin gas production area and was probably related to gas extraction as was the earthquake I experienced in Dry Cave in 2005.
