College and/or university courses on speleology

Postby Ernie Coffman » Jan 18, 2010 3:17 pm

Does anyone know of a college and/or university that's offering courses on speleology? I know Brucker's course is in Kentucky, but was wondering if there are other schools that are offering courses, also?

I would pick Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green if I had to get my degree again, some of the best minds in the country (speleologically speaking) are there. I took a class in Speleology at Missouri State University in the 70's, but I don't know if it is still offered. I also took Roger's class 2 years ago. For not having a degree in geology or speleology, that man has forgot more about the formation of caves and hydrology than I have ever learned. :big grin:

Thanks Booger for that information. :kewl: I'll keep hoping for more, but tomorrow I'll see if Stephanie has any info at the Office, also. :woohoo:

"Is it offered by any colleges in Georgia?"

Just go to the website of a Georgia University you are near and see if they offer one in their geology program

There are a number of schools that offer courses related to caves, some are related to biology, geology, hyrogeology, etc. Couple that come to mind include the program at Western Kentucky University with Chris Groves and Lee Floria (I have a graduate degree from there), University of Minnesota with Dr. Calvin Alexander, Mississippi State University with Dr. Milroy, Univ. of Akron with Ira Sakowsky, Oklahoma State University with Dr. Todd Halihan, LSU with Dr's Summers and Wicks, UT-Austin with Drs Jack Sharp, Jay Banner, and Phil Bennett (they also have great funding), West Virginia University with Dr Rauch and Dorthy Vesper , University of South Florida with Dr. Vasher, and I'm sure there are many more.

Geary,

Now that's a list that I was looking for. :banana_yay: Most of us have heard about Western Kentucky and so forth, but getting all these others is terrific.

You can add NMT (New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology) to the list. They have some association with NCKRI. I believe Penny Boston is still the lead on this program.

Not necessarily speleology, but this school needs a caving instructor.

College and/or university courses on speleology

Good gosh, this is the format of what I had for my GATE students way back when. And, a full professorship is recommended, but my lowly MA would suffice. That's something else! Oh, well! That's in the land of cute box turtles that are scattered all over the roads; and, near the city/town of Rolla (sometimes pronounced Roll-a...and sometimes pronounced Rol'-la by the locals. ) This list should be able to come up with some candidates, I would think. Wonder if they're taking out of state ones.

Welcome to CaveChat, Nathan, and thanks for that update on some more folks that are teaching in the colleges/universities, on caving/karst/etc. :kewl: I'll forward these along with the other schools to Stephanie at the NSS Office, as this will help her out tremendously. :cavingrocks:
