Early NSS News numbering...

Postby harrym » Sep 9, 2009 8:40 am

I've been trying to determine exactly what constitutes a "complete" set of the NSS News. Since the early issues were not numbered like they are today, trying to solve this problem is difficult. Even the NSS can't answer my question.

So I've decided to post all that I know of the early issues of the NSS News. If anyone else has additions or changes, please add them. Perhaps this way we can determine exactly what constitutes a "complete" set of the NSS News.

VOLUME I (1941-1943)
-Winter Program-1941
-Labor Day Program (year?)
-NSS News-Letter January 1943
-NSS Newsletter June 1, 1943
-NSS Newsletter July 20, 1943
-NSS Newsletter December 1943

VOLUME II: (1944)
#1-Jan 1944
#2-Feb 1944
#3-May 1944
#4-Aug 1944
#5-Oct 1944
#6-Nov 1944
#7-Dec 1944

VOLUME III (1945-1946)
#1-Jan 1945
#2-Feb 1945
#3-Apr 1945
#4-May 1945
#5-Jul 1945
#6-Aug 1945
#7-Sep 1945
#8-Oct 1945
#9-Dec 1945
#10-Jan 1946

Sometime in the early 1960s I purchased reprints of Volumes 1 through 5 of the NSS newsletter. Most were indeed reprints, but many were originals. The first page of the volumes says:
VOLUME I, 1941-1943
NSS NEWSLETTER
of the
NATIONAL SPELEOLOGICAL SOCIETY
(The above was centered on the page)[then it says]
consists of a collection of letters, field trip announcements,
ballots, etc. issued without any volume or issue designation.
These papers are out of print and have not been reprinted
since they should not have been considered a part of the
publication.

There is no mention of who made the decision to not include Vol. I as not part of the newsletter so there is no way to tell how official that is.

The issues that were sent to me exactly agree with what you listed for Vols. II and III.

That's pretty interesting. I think it's pretty clear what constitutes volume II, III, etc. But volume I is what has me stumped. Maybe the answer is that there really wasn't a volume I.
