NZ Caver = Winner!

Postby Scott McCrea » Jul 24, 2009 9:57 am

Cavechat's own NZcaver won the medal (top prize), last night at the ICS/NSS Salon, for the print category. He also had a many other images selected for the photo salon. Jason Gulley took top prize in the photo salon with a very cool image of a vertical cave and the rigging in a glacier/ice cave.

Thanks guys! It was a totally unexpected honor.

I'm at the airport in San Antonio right now, waiting for my flight. In a moment I'll try uploading my 2 images which won awards. I really liked Jason Gulley's fantastic blue glacier caving photos which won awards in the photo salon (what used to be called the slide salon). Very cool! And of course there were many more awesome images from lots of other US and international photographers.

OK, I think I got the images working. Here's a sneak peek for anybody who is interested.

Image Image

The left photo "Ascent to Eden" won the medal for best of show in the photographic print salon. It shows an anonymous caver on rope in Neversink Pit, Alabama.

The right photo "Species of Concern" won an honorable mention in the photographic print salon. It shows biologist Pete Febbroriello inspecting a bat with White Nose Syndrome in Mystery Cave, New York.

Other award-winning images can be found on the NSS website at:
http://caves.org/committee/salons/Print.shtml (photo print salon)
http://caves.org/committee/salons/Slide.shtml (photo slide salon)
Click on the ribbon to see some great images from recent salons. The 2009 images have not been uploaded yet, but should be on the website soon.

Congratulations! The Neversink photo is great as a small file online, I imagine it's breathtaking as a print. I like the bat picture too. Nice to see gloves and mask. I'll always wonder if the tragedy could have been avoided had all involved used good sense and proper ppe. What kind of light is Febbroriello using?

Pete's headlamp is a one-of-a-kind that he built himself. It's the reflector off an old carbide caplamp with a side-emitting LED in the middle. The LED is a 1-watt, I think. In the photo it almost looks like one of those old fashioned mirror things that surgeons wear on their heads.

Thanks!

I'm *almost certain* my anonymous model was taking a break to enjoy the view and/or catch his breath while ascending, not DEscending. But it was 4 years ago, and I could possibly be mistaken. Do you see something in there which indicates the person is rappelling?

Anyway, the title has stuck now. And "Descent from Eden" doesn't quite have the same ring to it. :tonguecheek:
