Justasking need only check with his local Civil Defense Office. They surveyed and marked many caves in the US (Shelta Cave is one) as fallout shelters back in the 50s and stocked them with cans of water, hard candies, rations, etc. Huntsville cavers routinely ransacked these rations for the candy. I'm sure the offices have detailed directions, how to behave, when to check for all-clear, etc., etc.

BIll, I see your point about Ruby Falls, but how would one ever get used to the smell of BO and heavy perfume from the tourists?

A person from Indianapolis would probably not notice any of that. :tonguecheek:

Ah but if conditions were so bad that said person from Indianapolis was compeled to leave a perfectly good home to set up residence in Ruby Falls? Well then I gotta think the tourist trade has already fallen by the wayside and would not be a problem.

Seriously though, there could be a lot of old underground Civil Defence defence fallout shelters in city tunnels and such. I was in one once. About 30 feet underground, it had once served as a utility line conduit but had been abandoned. It still had the old CD supplies cached in a junction room. I bet a little searching could reveal a lot of similar sites in unexpected places.

You only think you're kidding.

My commute to the ambulance service I worked at in Indy involved passing by Lilly, Central Soya, and some other
food processing plant. I usually arrived at work thoroughly nauseated.

The only thing near me now that comes close is a CAFE pig farm that sometimes gets odorous when the air
is humid and still, but luckily they are 5 miles away and downwind...

All caves in Indiana are closed. You'll have to look to a different state to hide in.

Sorry,
