April News - pages upside-down

Postby Bob Thrun » Apr 12, 2009 6:14 am

I got my April 2009 NSS News a couple days ago. The center four pages were upside-down. Did others have the same problem? It would be easy to remove the staples, invert the center sheet with the four pages, and restaple, except I do not have a saddle stapler.

Bob obviously received one of the issues printed for the Australians.

You know, unless that's been done, that would be a good April Fool's joke. Publish an article on the hazards of caving in Australia. The problems with trying to avoid crawling over stalactites, or the risk of stalagmites falling and hitting you on the head.

And don't ask about the problems with rigging and trying whether to use a frog system while descending or not. Though most use a bobbin of some sort for ascending, the good-old fashioned j-rack is gathering popularity for most ascents.

I think this would be a great article to read while eating the results of this year's Spaghetti Harvest

Regarding Bill Putnam's post here:

Seems a bit of a cheap shot as the implication is that by electing Bill we won't have something "unprofessional" like some pages upside down in the NSS News. How he would ensure that in binding 10K-plus issues, there are no mistakes is beyond me. You could pay big bucks to someone to check each issue before its sent out, but so few have problems that its far cheaper for the Society to replace the few that are messed up. Our printer does a great job overall and best yet hasn't raised his prices in the 12 years he's been printing the issue.

Dave,
I think you're misinterpreting Bill's post. He posted just the  smiley in response to the April Fools joke. The whole slogan thing below is actually his signature line, which appears under all his posts. I think you'll find it's not directed specifically at a few pages being upside down in the NSS News. Bill added this whole election blurb last weekend when he announced his candidacy for the BOG and put a big shiny flag on his avatar.

So the printer hasn't raised his prices in 12 years?? That's nothing short of amazing!

NZ Caver:

Right you are, guess I won't change that write-in vote for Bill I was making....<bg> (tried to put a "smiley" icon in here and lost everything I had just written with an error message...grr).

And yes, not only has the printer not raised prices, we've gotten more for our money: more color, thicker paper, and an aqueous coating on the cover (prevents fingerprints setting in the ink from sweaty fingers...). And we're getting better plates for our money too (direct computer to plate).

How does that aqueous coating deal with raindrops? My most recent issue was retrieved in the rain and kept dry..until I was taking off my coat when a big ole drop hit the corner. It immediately looked like finger paints. I have gotten previous issues "sprinkled" in the past with no real effects. Not a big deal for me but just curious.

FWIW--Dave, I think you do an outstanding job on the NSS News, and I did not take Bill's  as a jab at the mag, but a response to the joke Cheryl made above it. I also almost spit out my soda when I read Phil's comment below Bill's post!!! :funny post:

Dave,

I love you too, and I have said for years (on the record and off) that you do a terriffic job and should have a much bigger budget, so that the News can become more like Descent in size, content, and coverage. Of course, you need more cavers to write and send in more articles (especially CDS members!). Tell you what - I will write one for you myself. I have several on the back burner and choose and send the most promising, as soon as this campaign is concluded. At the moment it is consuming most of my non-family, non-work, non-SCCi time and resources.

Bill

p.s. I really was just laughing at Cheryl's April Fools post, and I'm really not sucking up to get your vote. I don't even want the job - I just want results. But when you want something done right ...
