15th International Congress of Speleology

Postby Dan Sullivan » Jan 23, 2006 10:27 am

As many people on this forum are aware, the NSS won the bid to host the
15th International Congress of Speleology (ICS) in Kerrville, Texas on
19-26 July 2009. This news was reported and copied on various caving
listservers a few months ago, copied to some newsletters, and also
mentioned in the two NSS News articles on the 14th ICS late last year.

During their November 2005 meeting, the NSS BOG made several decisions the
ICS Organizing Committee was waiting for in order to begin moving full
steam ahead. One of these decisions was to combine the NSS Convention with
the ICS, something that ICS host countries often do. Since then, and
despite the holidays, everyone on the Committee has been putting in long
hours getting started on their jobs. Detailed information on the ICS will
be released soon:

1) We have submitted an article to the NSS News that will introduce members
to the ICS and answer most, if not all, pressing questions. It will be
published in the March or April issue.

2) The ICS website is currently being overhauled. It should be ready by the
time the News article comes out. It will contain a lot more information
than the News article and much that is not on the current version of the
website that was developed during our bid for the ICS. The address is
http://www.ics2009.us . Notices will be widely posted when the update is complete.

3) A brochure is under development for distribution to three international
cave and karst conferences this spring, as well as to other people
internationally until circulars with registration information can be
provided (registration will not begin until 2008).

Dan Sullivan has kindly agreed to monitor activities for us on this forum,
pass messages to the Committee, and send responses back to the forum.
However, if you have questions now about the ICS, please help us by waiting
for the NSS News article and the updated website which will likely provide
the answers. After this initial overhaul, our goal is to keep the website
so current that if you don't find an answer to your question there, then
the chances are excellent that we're not at the point where we can answer
it. This strategy will keep you as up-to-date as possible to reduce the
number of questions you'll need to ask, giving the Committee more time to
focus on generating results and making this the best ICS ever.

What is the ICS and the UIS?

Thanks Dan for taking on the role of "message courier" between the NSS DB and the committee.

It occurs to me that some cavers might not be aware of what the International Congress of Speleology (ICS) is or what organization sponsors this Congress. It is held every four years and is promoted by the Union Internationale de Spéléologie (UIS)

http://www.uis-speleo.org/president/uisintro.html

The above link will give you a bit of background or use your favorite search engine to check out International Congress of Speleology. I got several hits on the last Congress in Athens, Greece in 2004.

I'm sure the article in the NSS News will give some background but for those who are impatient maybe the above link will answer some questions.

I hope someone has the good sense to do the NSS Convention at the same place and same time.

Last time, in KY in 1981, we had a one-day Convention on the Sat after the Congress. That worked out pretty good.

Anyway, I'm sure many people won't be able to do both that year, and the Convention would REALLY suffer.

Although one or two groups have expressed an interest, we haven't received a bid yet for a 2008 Convention. :help:

Anyone reading this who might be interested in hosting a NSS Convention, contact Carol Tiderman, Chairman of the Convention Development Committee: ctider at us.ibm dot com :waving:

We are preparing the 2nd Circular, which will give you the information you will need to register for the Congress. It will be printed as one small book in English, French, German, and Spanish. Although 20-25 pages will be devoted to each language, the 2nd Circular cannot contain as much information as the website. Therefore, to minimize costs and save a few trees, we will not mail printed copies of the 2nd Circular to anyone unless you request it and send us your mailing address by 20 April 2008. From the website (http://www.ics2009.us) you will easily be able to register, find much more information than will be in the 2nd Circular, and view, download, or print the 2nd Circular if you desire. We will mail the circular to people for whom we do not have e-mail addresses.

Thank you for your support,

George Veni, Ph.D.
