WNS forum?

Postby wyandottecaver » Feb 24, 2009 7:57 pm

I think all will agree that the WNS thread is getting a bit bloated. While the topics usually have some tie to WNS it can still be difficult to sort out all that has come before. In light of this I was wondering if a moderator could create a WNS sub forum where various seperate but related threads could live.. like rope decon, a locked thread for NSS liason updates, a thread for basic information on WNS, and another FAQ thread.

Pretty please :big grin:

I would applaud the creation of a WNS forum. This would be good for the reasons people have stated, but in addition it would be good because the existence of a forum for discussions of WNS would emphasize that WNS is an issue for cavers to consider and deal with--it would raise awareness about WNS.

Perhaps a WNS forum could also have a locked thread at the top providing instructions for donating to the NSS's WNS Rapid Response Fund.

The bloated WNS thread could be split into a number of threads, but since it's been around a long time and has some kind of logical progression to it (or at least parts of it), and since people have gotten used to using past pages of the thread for reference, I think it would be better to simply move the WNS thread to the WNS forum, lock the thread, and have people create new subtopic-specific threads to continue discussion of WNS matters.

I heartily agree with the suggestion for creating a WNS forum. That makes far more sense than trying to either shove everything into one thread, or having a main thread in the Bats forum, plus subsidiary threads spread across other forums, such as WNS Decon Procedures in the Equipment forum, "WNS in TAG?" in a local grotto forum, etc. WNS has become a sufficiently important, diverse and unfortunately, probably long-lived subject to merit creation of its own forum.

Mods, what say you?

ack - y'all are like trying to herd cats!

I can't do anything with this thread now being that I'm at work. Even at home it might take some time to pick it apart. I'll see what I can do though.

For now, no more WNS threads. Grotto-specific forums aside, let's keep the WNS questions/comments/news in THIS THREAD. I'll see about getting a separate thread for decon procedures.

Kevin - there already IS a separate thread for WNS decon procedures - it's been around for over a year, over in the Equipment forum - WNS nylon decontamination discussion

WNS new subforum

Postby Squirrel Girl » Feb 25, 2009 3:45 pm

Per request, I created this subforum. As I've never done this before, I'm checking to see if it works properly before moving the Topics into here.

Perhaps we should close all Cavechat forums to visitation, especially the less active ones (where a lot of endangered threads are "hibernating"), until the moderators determine what is causing the proliferation of WNS threads, and how we can best control their spread.

And cavers should only allowed to post in threads specific to their own region - you never know, the spread of WNS threads might be caused by a virus, and we all know that viruses can very easily spread from one computer to another hundreds of miles away!

Just change your clothes between visiting different categories.

Of course, this assumes you wear clothes while visiting Cavechat.
