Alpine Karst "in the beginning" now out

Postby caverdoc » Nov 27, 2008 8:06 pm

At the risk of being premature, I've been informed that the 2008 issue of Alpine Karst will be out soon, as a reprint of the original first four issues from the 1970s. Those cavers who, like me, have been looking to complete their libraries with the entire set (I own two of the four original issues)will soon have that opportunity.

When it becomes available I shall post the cost and where to order. Also look for a review in an upcoming NSS News.

Stay warm!

Dr J

Purchase info is on their website - http://www.alpinekarst.org/publication.html

Dr J - For some reason, I have a copy of each of the first four issues of the original AK (plus the last two new ones of course). I also have four issues of Inside Earth - remember that one? - a great mag with some really creative cover art.

Ian
You're my hero, literally!
Wish I had the full set, I'm going to rely on the reprints.
I also have a couple of the old Inside Earth, that was the era when I started caving. Fun times!

WOW, the new edition just arrived and it is a quality piece of "resurrective publication." Tina Oliphant has really done a great job of bringing four seminal publications into the 21st century.

It's no secret that the first four editions of Alpine Karst were quality publications, especially given they were produced in the era before desktop publishing and easily accessed Kinkos in every city. Ron Zuber and Jim Chester, who edited the Summer 1977 and Summer 1978 issues, contribute a lively two page article about the early publication process, including using an old Frigidaire freezer as a layout table (photograph included!). Chuck Pease, who edited the first two editions of AK also writes a short piece on his editorship. Tina Oliphant contributes a brief piece about her decision to include two Montana caving articles from Frank Binney's long-ago publication Inside Earth (a copy of which I fortunately own!) describing early efforts in Lost Creek Siphon, and the Scapegoat Mountain wilderness.

Look for my more complete review in an upcoming NSS NEWS.

The color covers are outstanding as well!

You can order online at www.alpinekarst.org under the Publications page.

Hopefully these issues contain extensive, and previously under-reported, discussions of the many and varied uses of Spectra in alpine caving!

For those wondering about the above couple posts :funny post: they refer to cowstail construction and just go to prove Miller' s Law. See under On Rope section for definition.

You guys are really, really taking me back. Chuck and I caved all over Europe in the mid-70s when alpine caving (for us American continent types) was coming into vogue. I remember Jim Chester's writing, but I don't think I ever met him. And Frank Binney...don't get me started!

That era was often referred as the golden age of Texas caving. I think I have the full set of Inside Earths, but I may have framed that one cover of the girl cavers jumping into the cave: "Get'em Bernice!". Texas had some real activist females at that time...as did the USA in general come to think of it. We've come a long way since then.
