Love My Bombers

Postby Grandpa Caver » Dec 29, 2005 9:03 pm

Does anyone have any experience with "Dirty Daves Long Knee Pads"?

I do love my Bombers and, like many others, I'm wondering what will replace them when they wear out.

Yes, that's what I have. Dave is in my grotto.

They are very well made and stay put. I recommend them.

Thanks.

One question. Are the foam pads removable for washing?

Happy New year.

Gonzo Knee armor

Postby jds217 » Jan 7, 2006 8:56 pm

I used Bomber pads for several years, and loved them. When I destroyed one of them on a recent trip and had to replace them, I ordered Gonzo Gear Knee Armor, because the Bombers were no longer available.

The Gonzo pads seem well-made and the padding is good, but on my first trip with them I couldn't get the straps to stay tight. They kept slipping...anyone have a suggestion for getting these to stay in place? Or am I perhaps just hooking the straps in incorrectly?

They look so good and your endorsement is so compelling, that I just purchased a pair from green_fish_sports on eBay... I'll probably use them on 1/7/06 and will provide a review.

I used the SixSixOne 4x4's today on a five hour trip that was over 50% crawling. I was skeptical when we started walking to the cave because they felt bulky but I very soon forgot I had them on. Throughout the trip these pads *never moved.* Yep, they stayed right there over my knee waiting to do their job when the ceiling got low. And what a job they did! My biggest concern at first was getting too hot wearing them because of the wrap-around design, but that was absolutely not a problem. One velcro strap did pull away in a really tight space. I couldn't reattach it in the same place because the mating velcro was now full of mud. Turns out they covered some "extra" vecro with thin material that I pulled aside and voila! -- the strap was slightly tighter but firmly attached.

In summary, no real complaints -- a surprisingly good set of pads.

Hm ... those 661 4x4 kneepads do look interesting ... I am definitely in need of new kneepads. I was in agony crawling out of Unknown Cave last weekend.

Those 661 4x4 stay put no matter what, however they do are a little too hot, at least for caves here in Mexico, and they chafe the back of my knee, other than that theyre great

Dirty Dave's Pads

hmmm. I haven't submerged them, yet, like in a swim. I don't think they'd get all waterlogged and heavy, though. I'd guess they'd be similar to the Bombers et al.

I guess I should test swim in them :-) to give an accurate report.

Thanks for your thoughts on it! If you do test them out, lemme know. I need a new pair prior to February 24. :woohoo:

I cut the wrap around material off of mine and wear them with a lot of layers underneath.I would imagine with no undergarments they would chafe . Maybe glue some lycra on the inside for anti chafe? I would imagine they would be warm in Mexico!! it's warm in a t-shirt  Mine were no too hot in the minus 22 C windchill yesterday as we dug into a wet cave.

I am glad you like them! I was worried making a recommendation would would put the proverbial egg on my face. I have had many people look at me weird due to the pads, but I really found they work well. When I wear them under the Lost creek coveralls of course mud is not a problem and even when they are on the outside packed in mud I have only occasionally had a strap come undone.I have been playing with adding additional Velcro along the strap itself in case though.

knee pads

Postby pebblepoint » Mar 19, 2006 12:01 am

Funny,
This topic came up on today's trip.
I've spent lots of money on vendor's kneepads through the years. Some as high as $40+ per set.
Conclusions are:
Long kneepads make it harder to wade deep water and they become mud and water logged.
Velcro just won't cut it in Missouri mud, even 2" velcro.
Hard kneepads are dangerous in climbs. They slip when you need traction.
If you can't readily readjust them or move them down (we have a climb that is so tight, that I can't make it with the kneepads on), you don't want them.
For the above reason, anything that you wear under the pants doesn't work for me.
The built in kneepads in my two cave suits lasted one trip. Then I cut them out.
Conclusion? I now go to K's Merchandise and spend $12 for wrestling
kneepads.
