Nylon Highway article

Postby George Dasher » Feb 21, 2008 8:25 am

Does anyone know when Nylon Highway #20 was published?

It has an article in it by Bob Thrun on "Vertical Cave Surveying."

That's all.

Be aware that I retained the copyright for that article. It is not subject to the blanket permission to reprint that many of the caving publications have.

I was just trying to update the bibliography for On Station.

Somehow a fair number of the entries are missing dates.

That article also talks about the traverse at Seneca Rocks in 82' I watched them while I was climbing there! Incredible!

George, do you plan on updating On Station and publishing a new revision?

i've been holding out on buying it for months on this presumption - eventually my grotto mates are going to kill me, because I keep having to call and ask them to look stuff up for me.

"What does On Station say in regard to what is and isn't countable toward cave length?"
"Isn't there an example map in the back of On Station that lists surveyors by number of trips?"

...etc. it's beginning to affect my personal safety.

PS - i didn't realize all these articles were online! I know what I'm reading at work today, starting with Bob's article.

David. I was speaking with the EVP this weekend and he mentioned that George was updaing On Station. So, going out on a limb, I'm going to state that there will be an updated On Station in the future. (Of course, I'm just keeping my eye on George, because he needs watching). Jep.

On Station: On Station is about ready to go out of print. If you want one, you'd better puchase one real soon.

On Station Two: Yes, I am working on an On Station Two. It won't come out before the summer of 2009 (because I am having troubles with the comptuer sections). Of course they're is always a chance it won't come out at all, because putting these things together is hard and I might give up or die or something.

Cave length: the length of cave is the sum of all the slope distances as measured in the cave. It is not a total of the horizontal distances.

Cave depth: the depth of a cave is the vertical difference between the highest and lowest survey stations in the cave.

Pit depth: the depth of a pit is the slope (or rope) distance as measured in the cave. It is not the vertical depth, unless the pit is a true vertical pit.

Zero datum: The zero datum for a vertical cave is the top of the sinkhole, or where water, if poured on the ground, would flow both into and away from the cave. Use common sense--it the sinkhole is a mile in diameter, then the zreo datum should be placed at the edge of the pit, not at the top of the sinkhole. The zero datum for a horizontal cave is the drip line, or the shadow line if the sun is directly overhead. There is an international standard (dating from the 1970s) for cave length, cave depth, and the zero datums.

List of surveyors: Yes, you can list the surveyors by the number of trips. I usually do it as such: Bob Alderson (12 trips), Bob Anderson (11), Gordon Brace (10), George Dasher (1), etc.

Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the update. I was quite pleased this weekend when I heard that you were working on an update. It's one book that doesn't gather dust in my collection.

Jep.

PS. Made the rum cake the other week and it was well received. Please let Sarah know.

Thank you sir! I vaguely recall there being an example in the back of On Station that followed this paradigm. The map I'm currently working on has had 90+ surveyors involved with the project, the highest total number of trips being 40, and I'm trying to find a reasonably fair way to list them all! I think that will work beautifully.
