There's no reason the waterproofing and the protective shell have to be the same mechanism. Do the shrink-wrapped and tool dipped method, then put the whole thing inside a thin aluminum shell (either a cylinder or square tube cut to length. You could then shrink wrap that and put it in a cordura sleeve. As long as there is air space and some degree of flexibility immediately around the battery, you should be able to put a hard shell outside that to resist impact/compression. Wrapping all the batteries togeather and waterproofing them as a unit should provide you with enough air space between the batteries. Just a thought.
Love the design. I would like to make one but with a few modifications. I will email you at some point soon to talk about what you think might work.
