It's the weekend after TAG and it's at the OTR site where the consensus is they were just there for OTR itself, why bother. I hope that's not the case among everyone else and there's a big turnout, as I am looking forward to it. October is a great time of the year to camp.

I've heard folks say the same thing. Plus, they're afraid it's gonna be pretty cold...

I'm looking forward to it!

Dang, after all the heat we've been having all summer you would
think cavers would flock to a cool caving event. I have never been
to this one but may consider it. I love to camp in slightly cool weather.
When is the event this year and where?

Thanks for the dates and location. I've been to OTR so I know
where Daily, West Va is. Is there a link for preregistration?

I think I swayed a lot of my friends at OTR this past weekend so they are now leaning toward attending now.

Smaller events are some of the best ones. TAG is a big one with
a usual 700 to 1000 visitors. Smaller events are more friendly.
That is why I have always like SERA. It is not huge like TAG and
OTR. Smaller events are more intimate. Easier to make friends
at a smaller event. I went to TAG the second year after it moved
to the mountain top and I was disappointed in the lack of friendliness
I encountered. But maybe that is because I don't kiss southern cavers
asses, and I never will. Quite frankly the friendliest cavers I've ever
met are from Ohio. Hopefullly I can expand my opinion to include West
Virginia too if I make it to the event.
Please post a preregistration link. I am also a cave digger with
lots of information to share.

Thanks. I got the link and printed out the preregistration
form. Ahh. Nice cool weather. Can hardly wait. And
the area is beautiful too.

Don't get me wrong...TAG has friendly cavers but I
found it a lot harder to meet people with the new
layout spread out into the woods. A lot nicer and cooler
for camping but without the central location it was
not as intimate unless you belonged to a grotto with
a group camp. Single campers were lost in the woods.
I know the OTR site is more like the old TAG site. A
nice big open field where it is easier for all to mingle.

Thanks Cheryl,
I'm not sure I'll be able to make it but it's good to know there are friendly
cavers waiting there if I do. Thanks for the invitation. The event sounds
like a great opportunity for some nice camping and great caving too.

Looks like Kevin and I will be leading another cross-over trip to Carpenter-Swago. I'm not sure how sign-ups will go at the event. It says you can sign up at 10pm on Friday. But so you can plan ahead, Kevin and I won't be at VAR/MAR Friday night, so we will meet at the sharp turn near the Swago entrance at 10am on Sat morning.

This is a wet, multi-drop, vertical cave with unroped traverses. All cavers must be able to do an efficient change-over. Limit 8 cavers.

Should be in cave about 4-5 hours. We plan to be back at VAR/MAR in time for dinner.

Hope to see y'all there.

MAR/VAR cave trip

Postby pacaver » Sep 30, 2007 5:52 pm

I just received permission for a trip to Sites cave and Cave Rat cave on MAR/VAR Saturday and possibly a quick trip to Sites on Friday afternoon if there's interest. Sites is a vertical cave featuring a 184 foot entrance drop with about 1000 feet of nicely decorated passage at the bottom. I figure we can visite Sites 1st on Saturday and if we have enough time we can visit Cave Rat cave which is nearby. FYI: I can't guarantee you'll get back in time for the dinner if we visit Cave Rat cave so the 2nd cave may be optional for those who want to enjoy the dinner. I'll have a signup sheet posted Friday evening for the Saturday trip. Sites is not a beginner vertical cave, so prior experience is necessary. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to go on Friday, I expect to be at the MAR/VAR site by about 1:00PM Friday or so.

It sounds like this is going to be a great combined MAR/VAR!
