NSS Convention-Hot air balloon crew needed-NASA Research

Postby Jim Thompson » May 31, 2007 10:11 pm

By request I am taking "Flourish" my 105,000 cubic ft hot air balloon to the NSS Convention in July in Indiana.

We will give tethered rides and show how we use infrared thermography from an airborne platform as analog research for NASA to design probes for finding caves on Mars.

Need balloon crew members (cavers etc) to help. Early AM and at dusk
every day that is flyable.

Show up at the convention, look for the 9 story hot air balloon and help when you want to.

Thanks

Ps. Balloon crew get more rides

Are you the same caver that brought his balloon to Cave Capers one year? (That trip rocked by the way.)

That would have been at Pic-A-Chic Farms near Bloomington in 1997 if I remember correctly.

NSS Convention Balloon NASA Infrared cave detection research

Postby Jim Thompson » Jun 13, 2007 12:18 am

Nope. Never had "Flourish" at a caver event before except for NASA research.

I have had the infrared equipment at a NSS Convention; International Congress of Speleology in Greece and other caver get togethers, MVOR-VAR Etc.

Come by and help and ride.

Balloon over Marengo

Postby KENTO » Jun 13, 2007 8:46 am

This sounds great, it will be incredible to meet somebody who is preparing the way to study further those pits that were recently discovered by the Mars Orbiter...I wonder how many bars will be needed on the rack when the first NSS team descends those pits 35 years from now. :kewl: Heehee

MARS NASA Cave research

Postby Jim Thompson » Jun 15, 2007 9:26 am

Hopefully the images which appear to be lava tubes on Mars will in fact turn out to be caves and they can be "repelled" in a shorter period of time then 35 years.

Figure the physics of repelling in a 6 MB pressure ambient ATM. OK class, more or less break bars?

Hi:

Flourish, my hot air balloon is still in the FAA repair for it's annual inspection.

The plan is that it will be out on Friday and I drive up to Indiana arriving on Sunday.

Then we set it up and give tethered rides when we can, and show infrared airborne thermography.. Dawn and dusk do to the low winds at that time.

This will be a blast.

Thanks for all of the offers of help.

Cheers:
