Subcontinent's longest cave system discovered

The longest cave system in the Indian subcontinent has been discovered in Meghalaya's Jaintia Hills district by an international team of speleologists.
The team found a cave system over 22.20 km long, which surpasses the previous known record of 21.55 km of another system existing in the same district.

That's a year old story and was previously posted here on Cavechat. However I went on this year's expedition with the Brits back to the Jaintia Hills and hope to give a talk at convention and maybe an NSS New article on the expedition as well.

Fellow Cavechattian, Ian MacKenzie, was on the expedition, as well this year.

Last year when I met a friend of mine (Simon Brooks), who had just got back from India, he was very surprised to hear I had already heard about the news (via the Internet) before he had even mentioned it!

It's really amazing how how "plugged in" we are around the world, thanks to the Internet. Many of the European speleo sites have English pages, so it's easier to read what's going on -- not to mention Zenas' Worldwide Caving News site, which keeps track of various RSS feeds and posts.

I noticed several European speleo sites now have their own Caving Search Engine Swickis, too.
