High gas prices and caving

Postby Wayne Harrison » Sep 7, 2005 7:33 am

Have the high gasoline prices crimped your caving plans? Are you carpooling now? What's the price of gas where you live?

I'm in Colorado and ours is around $3.09 for unleaded. Our local gas station has a deal though. You buy $50 worth of gas and you get a free can to put it in.

I guess the price you are talking about is $3.09 per gallon for unleaded. Here in Tasmania (Australia) and also in Melbourne & Sydney, the price for unleaded has just gone past $1.40 per LITRE !! To memory, I think there are around 4.5 litres per gallon, so in your terms our price is around $6.30 a gallon.

... and yes, there's a lot less caving happening!

cheers
Arthur Clarke.

I plan on caving closer to home. I had planned on going to the Rocky Mountain Regional in Utah, but changed my mind when I figured up the gas. And that was BEFORE Katrina hit.

Ah, the UK vs US gallon. 1 UK gal = 4.546 ltr. 1 US gal = 3.785 ltr. 1 US gal = 0.833 UK gal. That makes the Australian gasoline cost ~$5.30/gallon US. That would be enough to curtail a lot of driving around in big SUVs and pick-ups.
I remember in the early 80s reading in Road and Track how the Corvette would soon be the last American car with a V8 engine. They couldn't forsee the change to cheep gasoline then and the big V12s on the road today. Everything changes.

I agree with Rick. I am doing the same and caving closer to home. I am staying to the distance I know in the past it only cost me a half a tank to go there and back.

In St.Louis gas is about 2.98 a gallon. I am still caving, but I am pickier about where and what I am doing.

Now tony... you have backed out on our last 2 trips (and broke my heart both times) either you are holding out on me or you are lying here...

Tom, calling me out the national board? WOW! I said I am pickier. I know that Carroll survey is the first of every month, I plan for that. Its the last minute trips that are a bigger concern. Besides, we have been trying to get you back into Carroll for the last three years! What gives?

Gas Prices VS Caving

Postby speloman » Sep 10, 2005 2:13 pm

Though I don't plan to let gas Take me down I will be caving areas closer to me I was lucky to move to a area that is a few hrs closer to my favorite caves and even a few I haven't been in before. But when I moved I did abandon some beautiful caves that I won't be able to visit as often. especially now with the prices.

I think I worked our prices out to about $4.80/gallon, with 4 L per gallon and prices averaging $1.20/L.

When I went to OTR prices were between $2.89 and $3.09/gallon; but strangely, all b!tching stopped whenever I mentioned what our Canadian prices worked out to.....

The whole thing about gas, is that,
there is a finite amount of it.

One day it will run out.

A bit surprising that only 25% are responding to price pressures by carpooling. For cave trips, it's more fun than driving solo. Not to mention cavers make a big deal about being conservation minded. If y'all got a big SUV, why not meet at a commuter lot and fill it up?

Those of us with limited incomes (and low clearance vehicles) love carpooling!!! :)

And I lucked out--the regional was practically in my backyard. It was a nice chance to get to some of the caves that I haven't seen yet.
