Just curious...

Who is writing the obit for the NSS News? I've been working on one for The West Virginia Caver.

I'm short on several things: a list or partial list of the caves Ron dove in in FL would be nice, and--amazingly--I'm having trouble finding where he caved in VA. I'm also a little short on his Mexico stuff, and I'm probably just going to limit myself to a list of the countries he caved in. The problem is Ron's caving career is very overwhelming, and I want to concentrate some on Ron the person.

The VAR History book and Ron's interview in the 2000 NSS Guidebook have been great.

Ron dove in some high-altitude caves on the west side of the Tetons. My only comment is: "WOW!" I think there was something in Sports Illustrated on it long ago.

George, Ron dove many of Florida's underwater caves. I personally know he dove in Blacksmoke (aka Baseline) and Ruth Spring Caves, in addition to Allens MPSC. He undoubtedly visited the classics: Peacock SC, Telford SC, Little River SC, Lafayette Blue SC, Madison Blue SC. Try contacting Wes Skiles or Jill Heinerth directly for a real list.

George,

Gill Ediger and I were talking the other day and he mentioned Ron was a participant in the Huatla Project for a long time.

Spring Cave. Ok! THANKS!!

Now! Does anyone know...

Did Ron ever cave in Cheve?

And was Ron the person who made the Simmons-Mingo-My Cave connection. My memory says yes.

Ron also made many dives in Roppel, extending the surveys beyond the upstream Logsdon River sump for over a mile.

THANKS Jim!

I knew Ron had worked in Roppel and in Logston, but I thought Logston was in Mammoth. I stand corrected.

Well, in the Mammoth part of the BIG cave....

Roppel, Mammoth, Roppel. It is all the same.

But, to be more precise, Logsdon River flows through Roppel Cave into Proctor Cave. The connection was made along this route. Ron dove the upstream end of the river beyond the first sump (300 feet long) and into the second sump. He also surveyed 3000 feet in an upper level between the sump, called Swicegood Avenue.

Here's an old picture I found of Ron.

It is from the VAR History, Part II, which was edited my Meredith Hall Johnson, Mary Sue Socky, and Tom Spina. The photographer is not know.

Jim:

Did Ron do any caving in KY outside of Roppel?

And, as I understand it, he did a lot of "dry" caving and surveying in addition to his diving in Roppel.

That's all.

george
