kneepad/shinguards

Postby graveleye » Dec 28, 2006 11:07 am

Hey I keep seeing cavers wearing these combination shinguard and kneepads... they have two fat straps; one behind the knee, and another down around the ankle. Does anyone know the mfr of these or where I can get some?

Could be Cecile's (B&C Wunderwear) new pad design, but also might be those knee pads that Karst Sports sells, called Dirty Dave's Kneepads. Most of the Dirty Dave's I've seen are red.
The B&C style have padding that literally wraps around 75% of your lower leg, whereas the Dirty Dave's look alot like the old Bomber Gear long pads. Both styles are around 50 bucks I think..

Those look and are described exactly like Gonzo Gear's kneepads. I wonder if PMI just relabels them and sells them as their own?

there is probably a few mfrs out there making this stuff. I have a customer who is a sporting goods distributor so I am going to call them and see if they have the inside skinny on some.

Yea, look like GGG's...they're good in theory...I have a real problem with them staying put and staying tight...the bottom strap loosens over time, and through climbing, they will end up shimmied down towards my boot after a few crawls/climbs, and then I have to stop, unstrap, pull pants leg down, restrap, etc...like I said, very rugged, very aggrivating.

Yep. I bought a set of GGG's from Eve, who bought them from Jay, and I did not like them much either, so I gave them to Aimee. I just don't like the closure method on those things. Guess when my old bombers wear out I will have to shop around for something else.

I've tried several different sizes of GGG pads and much to my chagrin, none have ever felt right.

Personally, I buy the cotton/padded ones you can get at Walmart for $5 and wear them. But every cave is different as is every caver and others may want more.

yes, if you google frenkenpads you get a bunch of ice hockey forum results, but Bill Steele from Texas was wearing those on a trip into Honey Creek cave and highly recommends them, I havent personally tried'em but they do look pretty tough.

A good point, Stridergdm.
Just got back from a wet cave with a lot of sharp edges, so I'm not sure how well cotton would hold up.
I have some $15 padded/synthetic ones I got at Lowe's that are held together with duct tape, so I have to find something before the Grotto kicks me out!
Having said that, what it the life expectancy of a "good" pair of kneepads? $15 and 1/2 roll of duct tape has serviced me very well through about 35 or 40 cave trips over the last 3 months, many of which had some pretty grueling crawls through rock, coarse sand, and/or water.
Is a $50 pair going to last me a year at this rate?
Regardless, I'll check out the Frankenpads - thanks!

I bought a pair of the older Frankenpads at the NSS Convention in 2001. They lasted 2 years of hard caving and now three years of not so much caving. They are still going strong. They are showing wear but not that badly. However, I do usually wear them over my polypro pants but under my B&C Wunderwear pants. Sometimes pit bouncing I don't wear the Wunderwear pants so I wear the Frankenpads exposed.

If you wear them on top of your caving pants they might not last as long but I'd bet on at least 2 years.

That's good info and certainly makes it look like it is worth the added, initial expense.
Thank you ma'am!!!!
