2007 NSS Convention July 23 - July 27

<img src="http://www.nss2007.com/logo1.jpg" align="left" vspace=10 hspace=10>It's not too early to think about the 2007 Convention in Marengo, Indiana! :helmet:

If you are planning on getting a motel room, be advised the official convention hotel only has 38 rooms and they are already going fast.

"The Convention motel is the 38 room Days Inn (812-739-4805, mention NSS) located 5 miles south of the campground in Carefree. Additional motels, restaurants, and brand-name stores are located in Corydon, approximately 20 minutes from the Convention."

We'll see you there! :woohoo:

Does anyone know if there will be camping at the convention? I am thinking about going. What are Indiana caves like anyway? I'm sure I would see some cool stuff on the way up there too having to drive thru TAG and Kentucky.

There will most definitely be camping at the 2007 Convention. :woohoo:

Apparently there is a large area available within walking distance of the Convention site (a school), and you can drive right up to your tent. Open fires are also officially permitted, and liquid refreshments too I believe.

Sure, a hot tub would have been nice too. But plenty of other factors apparently rank higher on the list when it comes to selecting convention sites. Imagine that!

Inevitable grumbling aside, the vast majority of cavers coped just fine with convention campground rules and restrictions this year. *Most* cavers are good like that.

I must agree with the karstocrat

the campsite selection was poor, especialy the whole "consuming alcohol on a school in washington is a class C felony" cavers will be cavers.

there was no ramen noodle wrestling, although i hear it was to be applesauce for washington.

at least a last ditch effort was mounted to build a sister winky, special thanks to kelsie from virginia i believe

2007 Convention Marengo IN

Postby caverd » Aug 26, 2006 1:03 pm

The site where the 2007 NSS Convention will be held is the 4H Fairgrounds for Crawford County. There have been two recent Cave Capers there (I've been to both).

There is a lot of room for camping! There are some areas with shade, but it's way in the back of the site (and not a whole lot of it). Bring shade with you! The high school is literally right across the road so we don't have to drive or wait on shuttle service to go between the campground and registration/vendors/and most sessions. We've been able to act like cavers in the past (adult beverages and associated evening festivities), so I would be very surprised if anything changes. I'm sure we'll be asked to maintain some level of discretion, but that is understandable.

Regarding caving opportunities, there will be plenty! Bring your vertical gear, wet suits, and any other gear you have. We can take you through multi-drops, muddy crawlways, or raging underground rivers where you'll have to swim (and your feet won't feel bottom). The deepest known single in-cave pit is around 140' so there's no need to pack 600' ropes. Bring the shorter ones. The pits are not as deep as those in TAG, but there's a lot of them and they can be a lot of fun. My friends and I will be setting up trips and will be open to hearing what people want to experience and helping locate caves.

There are plenty of other things to do in the area as well. The site is in a rural setting but very easy to find (about 5 minutes north of I64). Hundreds of caves easily within 30 minutes drive and plenty more within 1-1/2 hours. This is going to be a good one folks. If you are flying in, Louisville is the closest airport (SDF) and Evansville (EVV) is the second closest.

2007 NSS convention

Postby climbingallday » Sep 5, 2006 2:46 am

I have to bid for all my vacation time for next year in November. I hope to be able to attend the 2007 convention. I am one of those left coast guys. Could somebody in the know about Indiana tell me about how great the caving is there? It will make me feel much better about taking time off and buying plane tickets!

Hey 2007 Convention folks,

When will you have the 2007 Convention Web site linked to the NSS Web site (home page and Events page) so members can read about the Convention?

Cheryl-

If you are looking for a link from caves.org to the nss2007.com site, send an email directly to the caves.org webmaster- that is who would update the caves.org pages.

The convention should be sending each grotto a copy, and I believe the NSS AV Library will stock a copy. (I'm checking on that.)

You might write to the chairman of the 2007 Convention, Dave Haun, dehcave a*t onet.net
