Caving Knife

Postby Scott McCrea » Aug 24, 2006 7:22 am

Do you carry a cutting instrument while caving? What do you carry?

I carry a cheapo, knock-off Leatherman type tool. I rarely use it, but it's there just in case.

Speaking of just in case... This new Wenger Swiss Army Knife called the “Giant Knife Version 1.0.â€

Sweet! but I hear the Victorinox is coming out with a glow in the dark titanium version (non-magnetic) that includes a built in rappel device, ascender, compass and inclinometer for cavers!

I carry a french-made sailors knife that has a single partially serrated 3 1/2" blade. I like it because the handle glows in the dark. Never use it except maybe to cut my sandwich in half or maybe putting a spelunker out of his misery. Somewhere down in my pack is a swiss army knife too.

most often I carry THIS, but take something beefier if I expect a lot of cutting (i.e. anchor webbing).

Cool knife, Hank. While looking around Trango's web site, I noticed they are selling a bumper sticker. I think I need one. LINK

That bumper sticker been around for a while and quite prevalent here in the valley. We do are best to annoy the gapers (tourists), but they seem to like it. I've seen the bumper sticker with trango, euro motorcycle club, American Alpine Club (AAC), etc written after the tag-line. Scott heck you could put Swaygo after it.

Would be interest to put an international caving symbol first then the tag-line beside it

When it includes a biodiesel-powered winch, count me in. (No more frogging for me... just power it up and let it crank... :-) )

The knife I carry is a Cheapo Leatherman knock off. It has all the stuff a leather man has but has a extra set of screw drivers. I think it is good just incase I have to do repair work on my cap lamp pliers for people who tighten the screw gates on their caribiners too tight etc.

Spelo - next time you find a stuck carabiner gate, try hanging your (or somebody's) body weight on it before resorting to pliers/leatherman. I find the slight flex in the carabiner usually does the trick, allowing you to unscrew it by hand.

For what it's worth, the only knife I normally carry caving is a mini Swiss Army one tucked away in my first aid kit. Maybe I should carry one on my harness too..?
