Glück auf! / Glück tief! - English equivalent?

Postby lizlauffer » Dec 3, 2019 3:59 pm

Hi, cavers,

I am a literary translator from German to English. The book I'm translating has a scene set in a cave in the Swabian Jura, and the traditional German cavers'/miners' phrase "Glück tief!" (expressing good luck for a safe return from the cave) comes up. Are there equivalent traditional phrases used in English? Or is the German phrase universally recognized (considering Wikipedia has a page for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gl%C3%BCck_auf) ?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know. I can't think of an equivalent, but I have sent your request to a German caver who has lived in the US for several decades now.
