Alum Pot - A Classic Yorkshire Pothole

Postby Caver Keith » Nov 19, 2017 5:24 pm

This video has been languishing on my computer for two and a half months while I’ve been busy working on other projects.

Alum Pot is a pothole with a large open 100 metre deep shaft on the eastern flanks of Simon Fell, North Yorkshire, England.
The beck (stream) which cascades into it appears quite insignificant and the surface of the shaft is clothed with trees, yet it contains one of the best hidden sights in Yorkshire and probably one of the finest abseils in the country. It is a scene that can only be witnessed by cavers, and perhaps goes some way to answering the question, “Why do you do it?”

Wow, beautiful photography. I like the overhead shots from the drone. And all in hi-def, too! Run it full-screen, it is gorgeous.

I do wish you had included more footage of people crossing rebelays, using the frog-walker ascending system, and using a stop for descending.

With all that water it has to be cold. I see everyone was wearing waterproof coveralls. What is the temperature in there?

Is there any cave at the bottom?

Thanks for the great comment Bill. The video was taken in August so the temperature wasn't too cold. There is very little cave at the bottom, just a few metres before it sumps.
I do need to go back and take more video, but this was never intended to be a video in its own right. I just went to get a few shots to use in another video.
I needed to get back out to fly the drone so I didn't go to the bottom this time.
