OG Nss Cavers

Found this signature in Peterson's Meadow Cave in Montana. There are a lot of 1800's graffiti from the local miners of Anaconda but only this one between 1921 and 2001 that I could find. Thought it was historically interesting, only two years after the start of the NSS.

It reads:

Explored & Mapped
Dec 19 1943
H & B Seidemann
W Nelson
Nat Speleological Soc.

There are lots of early NSS numbers and names, as well as "National Speleological Society" and "NSS was here" labels smoked on caves in SE Virginia. Most of these are from the early fifties, but some are undated. A few of these caves were the scenes of some of the earliest SRT experimentation in the US, and have a long history of use, and, frankly, vandalization, by NSS members. I appreciate historical cave "graffiti" and feel that there is a proper time and way to write on cave walls. Most people, including many NSS cavers, do it the wrong way, though that's a pretty neat example you've posted.

Yeah, I was mostly surprised that there were NSS members in the backwoods of Montana at that time.

One of the worst is some Nss Members spray painting their name in the back of Indian Grave Point Cave in Tenn in 1969. Big huge red letters of a number of participants about 4' x 4'.

And most blatant in this cave was a private from a local military base actually used his full name and rank recently as he defaced the moonmilk.
