Educator is not bat-savvy

Postby ohiocaver » Apr 1, 2015 7:51 am

Is anyone else as annoyed as I am about the articles on bats on Page 1 and Page 7 of today’s Cleveland PLAIN DEALER? At first, I had to wonder if it was an April Fools gag.
The articles are about Ohio University’s president and wife fleeing their home because of bats. Honest, she breaks her foot trying to escape! I suppose it indicates that even people with PhDs who are in charge of learning and teaching, can be woefully uninformed about natural history.
The students are protesting the couple's move to off-campus housing...not because the move displays the leadership's ignorance but because they are spending $4300 a month on the new bat-free mansion.

Speaking of bats, I am looking for things to make but I am not into woodworking. I was thinking of maybe 3D printing bat houses. I know the organization for bat conservation recommends putting Polyethylene mesh on the inside of a bat house. I don't know what kind of plastics I can 3D print and don't know if it would mater. What do you think?

Take a serious big 3D printer to make a bat house! 3D printer is more for a 1/10 th scale modal than a full sized bat house.

If you have your heart set on a plastic bat house there are two BCI certified ones on the market. http://www.maberrybat.com/ and http://www.batbunker.com/ if those are too rich for your taste, contact me off list. I still have some un finished shells from my proto type run. Similar to Bat Bunker's but about half the volume. Have two installed on the back of my house and peeked at 97 bats last year.
