Gorham and Spring Acres Cave, KY connected

Postby rchrds » May 9, 2006 7:06 pm

From Preston Forsythe:

The cave dive made by Jason Richards of Clarksville, TN, two
weekends ago in Spring Acres Cave did connect to Gorham Cave!

I made a solo 45 minute quick recon into Gorham Cave, Sunday
afternoon and quickly found the pool with the tied-off dive line. I
had forgotten about this second pool, and on the day of the dive
Bill Eidson, Jason and I only checked the first pool and so were at
a mystery of where the room was that Jason came up in.

Jason is now excited about doing the dive again as this is still the
easiest way to get to the second pool with cave dive gear and then
continue upstream and see where it goes.

This connection is the top western KY cave trip of the past 10
years!!

Jason made two other dives two weeks ago while in Spring Acres Cave,
one a cut around "crawling dive" near the entrance and the other
dive was when Jason again crawled underwater out the main entrance!
All of these dives were done with 2 ft. visibility. Bold and safe
dives.

I had tried for 28 years to get someone to do this dive and out of
the blue came Jason. Thank you very much. For those of you who do
not know Jason, briefly, he is from Colo. and worked for awhile as a
forest ranger, I believe in the Maroon Bells area, then he went to
Fla. to learn cave diving. Jason is a helicopter pilot at Ft.
Campbell and a member of the Clarksville Grotto.

For those of you who do not know about these caves they are in Logan
Co., KY, east of Russellville a few miles. The WKSS has surveyed
over 31 miles in Logan Co. and Gorham Cave was one of the first
western KY caves we surveyed.

This connection ties the 2 mile Gorham Cave to the 1400 ft. long
Spring Acre Cave by a 110 ft. dive.

Tim Anderson is the owner of Spring Acres Cave and his second
cousins James and Larry Anderson are the owners of Gorham Cave.
Chris Anderson is not related to these Andersons as far as I know.

We will be updating Bob Gulden's long cave list soon.

:kewl:

I looked it up! If the one cave is exactly 2 miles as you report, the newly connected system is 2.286 miles long and that makes it the 391st longest cave in the US.

Connections sure give a sense of satisfaction, huh???

hehe- I'm just the diver- at least I dont have to survey with a two person survey team all of the rest of the other side of the sump-
The map of Gorham says 10319, I lost the map of Spring Acres- but there is some very interesting stuff there water wise- the passage leading to the sump is basically a sewer tunnel- dead straight- (and almost perfectly round) and continues as such underwater until it meets the pool in Gorham- but what WAS assumed to be the connecting sump in Gorham is offset by nearly 500 feet to the east.... hmmm... So there is more to look at- waiting for the rains to stop and the water to clear a bit, so I dont have to feel through the whole dive. I will bet that we can work out quite a few hundred more feet of underwater passage.
