Alaska's Outdoor Explorer radio show on caving

Postby NZcaver » Nov 6, 2014 11:25 pm

Today's Outdoor Explorer radio show on Alaska Public Media was all about caving. To listen, click the link and hit the play button below the first block of text. Good effort, even if the guy in the photo isn't even wearing a helmet!

Wow, a lot of very interesting information on caving in Alaska. So, Jansen, have you participated in any of these annual cave expeditions that the radio broadcast speaks of that are conducted in a different region of Southeast Alaska such as Prince of Wales Island, Heceta Island, Kosciusko Island, Dall Island, etc. each year? I am impressed that 50+ caves are being discovered each year on each expedition in each new region explored.

I have not directly participated in any of the expeditions discussed here. However I have been caving on Prince of Wales Island several years ago, helping teach a cave rescue class and assisting with a cave research project. The project caving tempo up here in Alaska seems to have slowed in recent years. But no doubt there are more caves out there, just waiting to be found...

Did your time caving on Prince of Wales Island include rappelling El Capitan Pit?

No, but we did use El Capitan Cave for rescue scenarios.
