I understand from Facebook, that Mudfest has been cancelled this year. So sorry to hear, Mr. Mud. It should have been a lot of fun. Big hugs to you.

It was cavers. They had an agenda. Now I have one.

You'll be reading my name again someday and it won't say Mud.

You surely do have the right to be madder than a hornet's nest poked with a stick.

Still, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are a still a lot of good cavers out there. Think of all your friends who didn't do the vandalism and who would join in trying to catch them. Don't turn your back on the rest of us!

Apparently any gates or fences that supposedly "protect" those caves are inadequate.

Are you sure local yocals weren't to blame? Frankly, that is who does most damage to caves here in TN. Real cavers are VERY conservation minded and want to protect caves
(but not gate them). Good luck with your efforts to reopen those caves to responsible cavers Cavemud. First thing I suggest is an offer to clean the grafitti and damage
as best you can.

Cavemud wrote:Tytoona Cave isn't gated and has a nice sized open entrance. It is in a very rural location with not much around it. There have been problems in the past with party people and vandalism.

The caves that were breached recently have all been attended to. Fantasy Cave was buried with about 5 tons of boulders by the landowner. NO CAVING. Blacklog and Sugar Caves were closed by their owners to all caving for now. Hopefully that will change in the future. The landowners there want no one on their properties. They feel very disrespected and of course blame cavers. We're working to remedy that situation. We opened Blacklog by digging in May of 1990 and have had an excellent working relationship with the owner there until this incident. We opened Sugar Cave by digging in September of 2005 after 18 years of sporadic digging. The owner wants no one there either.

I believe some members of the Nittany Grotto were going to do a clean-up of Tytoona Cave. I have not heard if this happened and the results.

Real cavers gated these caves....at the request of the landowners after they were dug open. If these caves were never gated they would be destroyed. The damage that was done in Blacklog Cave was minimal but it's there. There's some formation damage but doesn't appear to be intentional. They were off trail looking for more cave that doesn't exist in that passage. One trip in there by non caver local yocals would have done way more damage!

There are several gated caves in central PA. that the caving community in general doesn't know about. The landowners do NOT want them or their locations known. Liability concerns and disruption of their private property by groups of people will not allow caving access. Oh well, the caves are documented by those in the know and a watchful eye is kept open for the eventual sale of those properties. Sometimes when properties change hands, so does access.
