Wiley Mathews Cave (Missouri) History?

Postby SpeleoWV » Feb 6, 2014 4:19 pm

Hello,
I've been a lurker on cave chat for several years, and came across something I had to post. I live and work in West Virginia, but recently found a book in our county archives entitled "Tales of the Bull Creek Country" which talks extensively about a Wiley Mathews Cave in Smelter Hollow, Missouri. Evidently,Wiley Mathews was an outlaw convicted of murder and hid in the cave, the books says, for two years. It is an interesting story and includes pictures of the cave. I was just wondering if this cave is known today in connection with the story?
