William "Bill" Oldacre

Postby Buford » Oct 31, 2013 11:55 am

Long-time Florida caver Bill Oldacre passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida, attended by his wife Sherlee, daughter Maria, and sister Juliette. Bill was a Fellow of the society, the manager of NSS Warrens Cave Nature Preserve, founder of the Florida cave rescue organization, past-President of the FSS, and first recipient of SCCi's Swearingen Cave Stewardship Award.

Bill belayed so many people into and out of Warrens Cave, Florida's longest dry, that he felt like he was some kind of Charon, "ferrying" people into the underworld. I guess he has now met the real Charon, and knowing Bill, he probably repaired Charon's broken microwave oven on the shuttle over the River Styx.

We're scrambling to figure out how to fill his boots (he did so much for Warrens). Donations in his memory can be sent to the FSS for escrow to the Warrens Cave preserve.

RIP Bill.
