Hughes Cave (Union Grove, Alabama)

Postby stx2006 » Sep 26, 2013 11:32 am

Anyone know anything about Hughes Cave in Union Grove, AL? I was wondering if it was ever mapped and if so where can I get the map? Also looking to see what the length of the cave is.

Thanks! :bat sticker:

Hi, Matthew, welcome to Cavechat. Hughes Cave was mapped many, many years ago. Sadly, it is listed as Closed.

You really ought to get involved with the Huntsville Grotto. You'll learn a lot and get to know where many caves are. They are a great bunch of people. Here is the contact info page for them: http://www.caves.org/grotto/huntsville/

Thanks! There was no signs around the cave saying closed or anything... I know locals go there all the time. I did find a map on it from like 1970 or something like that.

Me and my buddy are looking into joinging the cullman grotto.

I'd ask cavers in the Huntsville Grotto. In particular, Chuck Lundquist and Bill Varnedoe, both of who did extensive research in the Newsome Sinks area.

Is the cave in the Newsome Sinks area?
I see it listed as a National Landmark... kind of stinks to bother having a National Landmark that no one can see.

Actually, I think it is just outside the true Sinks. It is on the left side going down the hill on the east side of the Sinks and the Sinks are to the right. Fine point, I know, but....

I tried to email Chuck Lundquist but got a kick back from the UAH server saying it was no longer a active account.. So I emailed Bill Varnedoe and havent gotten anything yet. Maybe it will work and he still checks it.

Shouldn't be hard at all. Most (if not all) counties nowadays have websites with land maps showing the owners. This includes Morgan County: http://isv.kcsgis.com/al.morgan/

This is assuming that you know where the cave is located.

You will probably have to install Microsoft Silverlight to run this map.

I have sent you a PM.
