NEW Bartow County Cave Found

Postby tschramp » Aug 29, 2013 11:25 am

A few years ago I found a large crater with an opening on Pine Log WMA in White Georgia but I can't confirm whether it is a cave or not. The entrance is shaped like a funnel with steep banks so you would almost need a ladder or at least a rope and someone else to help you in and out of it. The opening at the bottom is very narrow but you can see that it gets larger once you pass through it and the dirt that surrounds the entrance turns from dirt to rock inside. Does anyone know about this cave or does it have a name??

You could also try contacting the Georgia Speleological Society. There is a database and if you can provide them with coordinates they can check to see if it is a known cave.

I just went through all the Bartow caves and everything seems to be several mies north of the area described.
There is no reason a cave couldn't be there given the geography though.

There was extensive Iron mining on Pine Log circa 1890 1920. I know of several open mine shafts especially on the north side of the area.
use caution around any of these man made mines. There is no limestone on the area for cave formation.

I thought the demarcation between the Knox/Shady/Rome groups extended a little farther east and south of White, but you are correct. The bulk of Pine Log WMA seems to be granite/quartzite. The line goes roughly through the cities of Emerson, White, Pine Log and on up through Fairmount. What a difference a mile can make.
