Beta-testing of Android cave surveying app

Postby Chupakabra » Aug 20, 2013 5:31 am

Fellow cavers! Maybe some of you already ran into my posts on FB regarding new surveying app. Sorry if you have to read it again.

We are looking for cavers interested in beta testing of Android cave surveying app. Together with my husband we are developing app that is aimed to help cavers do all the surveying work on their devices - no more paper and pencil in the caves :woohoo:
If you are interested, please join our testers group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/abris-testers

Sounds interesting. Makes me wish I had Android. Which version are you making the app for? That might determine whether it is possible to pilfer an older cheap android for something like this.

Just for comparison: there is another application for paperless surveying of caves for Android from Marco Corvi - TopoDroid: http://code.google.com/p/topolinux/wiki/TopoDroid

We are supporting Android 2.3 and up. We hope that water- and dust-protected mobile devices will become more available soon.

We have publicly released our app Abris!
In addition, we have launched dedicated site where you can find manual, link to Abris on Google Play and read about ways you can help us.

Life Proof cases are water and dust proof. I have had one for over a year and they work great.

Are you willing to make the source code of Abris available so that an Open Source community can help add features, fix bugs, and write documentation?

Nice work so far!

I don't happen to have an android to test this and had some questions before considering trying to get a cheap one.

Based on the user manual, can I assume you haven't quite added functionality for anything other than walls? Looked like there wasn't any options yet for formations, water, slopes, etc.

Otherwise is looking really slick. Can't wait till survey is all done on a large android and no more paper required.

Thank you! We aren't planning to make our code open, at least for now. But we would be happy to fix some bugs  Please let us know if you run into any.

You are right, we have only line types now and their number is pretty limited yet. Regions and single objects (or points as they are in Therion) aren't supported right now.
I wish I could say the exact date when we will implement these features. The target is few months.

I'm very excited to find this. I just downloaded the App onto my unit (Casio Commando 4G LE) and will give it some testing this weekend. I'll be doing a 4 day, multi cave trip this next weekend, so I should have plenty of time to do some test runs on caves I've got good maps for. Since my phone is already water and dust proof, and has been into numerous caves for other reasons, it should have no problems entering data into the app.

Yay! We have released a new version. It was a month ago, but I just got to forum to share the "news"

So, we added export to vector format (.svg), scale bar and did some fixes.
