Quick questionnaire: Cave survey equipment

Postby soluskhc » Jan 23, 2013 1:49 pm

I've been caving for 16 years as a hobby, but I've noticed that gear is not always intended for that act of caving (unless it is from a small vendor).

I'm a industrial design/ product design student, working to solve common cave survey equipment problems, & embarking on making a new products, hopefully starting on Kickstarter if it is a success.

I need to hear from you, experienced surveyors, about your equipment.

Please fill out this 10 minute questionnaire here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5G379ZR

Appreciated if you elaborate here on the forum about problems, what you like, etc about the survey equipment.
Whether it is hands on such as tape, compass, clinometer, sketching; or more advanced computer software please tell.

I'll try and keep my progress posted.
Thanks,
Nina

Check paperless.bheeb.ch it is the most advanced instrument today. There should be the second generation in summer using Leica DISTO™ E7400x. Or 3D scanning using MS Kinect. Or software utilising them, ....

Part 2 of survey gear improvement, more focused on bag, tool belts/holsters, and others to hold Disto, clinometer, book, and other equipment.

Regarding the questions about the storage of survey gear while in cave - We use the small otter boxes for a tandem or a disto. You can see them here - http://www.otterbox.com/OtterBox-Drybox ... 2000-cases. The box we use for the disto is a little bit deeper than the box for the tandem. We use a piece of webbing and run it thru the slots on each end and can then carry it over our shoulder while in the cave and it still be protected without having to pack it up in a pack. This works great for storing them in between shots. I will take a photo of our set up and post it on here later tonight.

Back when I was surveying in TAG, I had a sleeveless jacket of sturdy blue jean material that had inside pockets on both sides. Pockets big enough for the 100' tape, the Brunton, pencils, and the survey book (or even two). That was sufficient. Pockets had a zipper. All self-made.

Blue jean jacket? You must've hung out with Lin Guy. I don't know if I've ever seen him caving w/o one!

Yeah, I've done a bit of surveying with Lin. And pockets inside one's jacket that can be sealed are handy for those who 'keep book'. . . especially if they can also be waterproof.

Gonzo Guano Gear "survey purse" is perfect for holding book, pencils, instrument, flagging, pair of clean gloves, and a small snack. At $15, it's a "best buy" for keeping your survey gear organized and for traveling light through nasty passage.
