My friend wants to explore a cave

Postby CaveLoverVII » May 23, 2013 7:18 pm

But neither of us have ever gone spelunking before and I'm not really sure. I don't what kind of cave we could do this in, or what kind of safety is necessary, but I don't intend to do anything particular dangerous. She wants it to just be us two doing this so we'd be alone in the cave and I want to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Is there anything really important I need to know? And are there even a lot of secluded caves we can just go explore?

Look on the website for a Grotto near you. Go to a meeting or two. They will show you how to cave gently and safely.
Two other points:
1- Cavers rescue spelunkers. Don't do something that will get you in the news.
2- I can think of worse reasons to go into a cave. But remember, you can get pregnant in a cave.

Welcome to Cavechat, CaveLoverVII!

Glad to hear you are interested in caving and that you looked for some advice before you went. That was smart. The easiest and cheapest and safest way to start caving is to go with a grotto (caving club). If you tell us where you live, we can point you towards a grotto and even get you in touch with someone that could help you.

Remember, we all started out just like you. I went into my first cave with a buddy and we knew nothing. However, most of us realized later that we could have saved a lot of time and money if we had just found a grotto when we started.

I like that name! But "Porta John's" has been basically underwater lately. About 2 weeks ago the lower section of the cave was completely underwater. When I went last week it wasn't that high, but I was crawling through 8" deep water and it has rained again since then pretty hard.

This 13 - 15 inches of rain we've had lately will flush porta johns out.
