New mile long cave in Alabama

Postby UnderGroundEarth » Aug 6, 2012 1:44 pm

Members of the Sewanee Mountain Grotto have been surveying a virgin cave as we go in Alabama. Last weekend we were very excited to hit the mile marker...! Virgin Borehole can still be found in TAG.

Any indication that you are starting to have a hard time finding new good leads, or does it look like it just keeps going and going....

Have you named it?

Brian F. - since this is virgin cave we survey as we go. we have no idea what's around the next corner and this keeps the excitement going for the survey and keeps people coming back to help on the project. we have surveyed over a mile of passage and 90% of it has been borehole. we are not ready to mention any names, yet!

Myrna: Kelly put me on to Marty Abercrombie who is surveying Byers. I may start learning with him.

The Sewanee Mountain Grotto is always happy to teach cavers how to survey. We've taught over 50 cavers how to survey in the last 4-5 years alone. However, due to the complexity and sensitivity of this project we cannot bring in any more cavers right now. 5 of the cavers working on this project with us are new to surveying and this is their first project. There is only so much room on a team, sorry.

I am referring anyone who is interested in learning how to survey to help on the Georgia Speleological Survey Byers Cave project with Marty Abercrombie. Byers Cave is an SCCi preserve and there are over 5+ known miles of passage. This project will take Marty several years to complete and he needs a lot of cavers to commit to helping. He is willing to teach cavers how to survey. Contact Marty for more information.

Hey Kelly, are you guys planning on coming back when hunting season is over? Steve said you might have one more lead to push. I'd like to make that trip with ya'll if I could. I've been in there 3 times now and have yet to see anything past that canyon where we had to turn around on your first trip.
