Yeah, definitely, you are "allowed" to sign up pre-training!

So, where is the "Bettendorf" quarry? I lived in Bettendorf while I was in high school and I don't recall a quarry. (not that Iowa isn't cluttered with quarries... I just don't remember one there)

Sounds like the conditions are good for you to appreciate cave water! Congratulations.

I've lived in the Quad Cities forever, and I had never heard of the place either. The one we went to is in Bettendorf's Crow Creek Park, near 53rd Avenue and Devil's Glen road. Google maps (satellite view) shows a hint of decent visibility along the shore, and a touch of green water compared to the brown soup we normally get around here.

The quarry dive did feel a little cave inspired, if that makes sense. We did lots of cruising near the edges, and it was neat to see the rock walls and all the boulders down there. Once in a while someone would hit the bottom or brush up against a muddy rock, and poof, you couldn't see anything but brown. I kept an arm on my dive buddy, or my hand on the rope down at the training platform, and thought it was rather interesting experience.

Will sign up on that board, thanks!

Wow, that's less than a mile from my stepmother's place! Just remember, almost everywhere (except Iowa Caves) will have better visibility and more to look at.

I'm in the process of signing up for the Advanced Open Water class. Most likely at a shop in Wisconsin. Am hoping to do a night dive and a wreck dive for the electives.

I'm really looking forward to getting back in the water.

In somewhat related news, I was looking over some health insurance info for my wife. It says-

"Has anyone applying for coverage participated in and dangerous or extreme sport activites, including, but not limited to: organized auto / motorcycle / powerboat racing, skydiving, , bungee jumping, ultralight flying, scuba diving, hang gliding, or mountain climbing."

Then they want to know when and how often person plans on doing all that extreme stuff.

My wife doesn't do any of that, so it's a non issue. Just thought it was interesting that they lump scuba diving in with bungee jumping and skydiving.
