I say your site has been an excellent reference for me in the past. Thanks for all your work.
It only takes one person to surrender a dog to a kill shelter ,but it takes many to rescue it.

Really sorry to hear that, Gary.

While it may have become a source of embarrassment for you, it has always been a fountain of knowledge and a fantastic resource for some of us. Thanks again for your phenomenal efforts with the website over the years. It will be sorely missed, 'poor quality' photos and all. (Actually I thought the photos were fine, and I'm usually quite picky about those sorts of things.)

Any chance of adding a little explanation/disclaimer like the one you just wrote, and keeping the site up anyway? Should we start a poll to see who appreciates your site just the way it is? Maybe gather signatures for a petition..?

Would you consider donating or even selling the site/contents to someone, a grotto, a region, Cavechat or, maybe, the Vertical Section?

I would argue that this is a resource that the caving world can ill afford to lose. You might want to look at a kickstarter project, or hiring this out to some poor indigent caver with photo skills, who knows his way around a website. I just think it's a super valuable resource, that we need to protect.

To all who seek wisdom,

Gary is just playing with his food again. Read the last sentence of his post.

The NSS purchased a new HQ, and as part of this large expansion we finally have room to store large collections. More importantly, we can display portions at a time as well have research room. Gary & I talked at the ICS in '09, and if he's still willing we have a home for his collection when he's ready to give it a permanent home. If he needs help re-photographing items, we can do that to once we get moved into our new facility. We'll have an area dedicated to digital archiving.

Gary,

If the only reason for dumping the "Vertical Devices" part of your website is because of:
1 The pictures are low quality
2 You can't keep up with all the new devices

Respectfully....those aren't good enough reasons.
1 Your pictures are fine. They show the device with a scale.
2 No one expects you to keep up.

Just please don't throw away access to ideas. The good and the bad. We need them to create "new" stuff. There's no point in recreating a bad idea again and your site has cured me of many of my ideas. :big grin:

If there's another reason....$$...or other. Maybe we can help.
Caves are rare and precious things. Cavers...even more so. Treat each accordingly.
