You could try some live gold electrical wiring, that'll take care of both your needs pretty quickly.

I was posting their expensive, fragile ropes--hanging around their necks.

I just don't think I can successfully rappel on Run DMC.

my recommendation for the product you seek

would have a sheath woven by crack addicts from the toe hairs of Indiana Bats

a core composed of the ashes from the gutenburg bible, original copies of the magna carta and declaration of independence, the shroud of turin, the deed to the new NSS Headquarters, and the crushed dust of the british crown jewels held together by glue produced from the top 5 Stud horses in the world.
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

Hmm, I wonder if the core of glue and powdered treasures would disqualify this from being called rope. I'd hate to see the handling properties of this one, thought I'd imagine that what it lacks in handling it makes up for by being imbued with magical powers. :big grin:

How about ceiling burner hose with a core of Sten 1 meter extension cables hooked together?

I have always been partial to "high speed" HDMI cables, they are like what $40 a foot?

:yeah that:

You are on a roll Jeff! I hate to ruin a somewhat ridiculous series of posts but the honest answer to this question for caving is: climbing rope. It is generally expensive per foot, sometimes 1$+, and has very different design requirements that tend to make it "fragile" as far as caving goes. It is also becoming very common with climbing gyms around so it is what some people first think of for life support.
I should add the caveat that I have ascended a fair amount of climbing rope in caves as a result of running out of static or first rigging it on a climb. It works but takes extra care and is not usually a good use of money not to mention the irritation of it being dynamic.

I am so disappointed that no one has come up with a SERIOUS answer to this question. Is it your lack of experience?

Well, I have the answer: Goldline.

Goldline was VERY expensive when I was in college, but I bought some anyway. It was supposed to be much better than Manila (which we normally used) and much stronger.

My Goldline rope broke just as I cleared the lip and started into free-fall in the Great Saltpeter Chasm here in Tennessee. It was a miracle I was not killed. My total fall was 42 feet and I hit three (3) ledges on the way down.

Years later, I found out that Al Ogden also had a Goldline rope break with him. He landed in an upright position and broke BOTH ankles. I'm not sure how far he fell.

And you thought there wasn't a real, correct answer.

I was thinking 6mm Spectra would be in the running, but in light of Larry's tale I'll defer to Goldline.
