I had to ask Dave Riggs. It's forum-speak for "Too long: didn't read."

No apologies necessary! Hanging out with Andy Armstrong for a week made me realize that my loooong absence from Cavechat has deprived me of some good fun.

LOL Jeff, it’s good to see you back again.

Well you have me feeling I need to explain my choice of a Figure-9 knot as my central attachment.
Cow-tails are usually tied with smaller diameter rope (I use 9mm dynamic).
The Figure-9 knot has more gradual bends then most knots which places less stress concentration at the bends.
And I like the Figure-9, it’s a good looking knot. :big grin:

I'd failed to notice that post about the Figure 9! The only part of this I disagree with is the part where you claim the figure 9 looks good, when in reality the figure 9 (on a bight) looks like a drunk guy tied a figure 8 and then backed over it with his car.

Overhand bight. Simple, sleek, and.... sober?

Sometimes I'm surprised at how frustrating it is not to have a "like" button on these forums.

Figure 8's for centers and barrel knots for the ends. I use 10.5mm dynamic simply because I have a lot lying around. I like the profile of the 8 at the maillion and I even have friends who use butterfly's. I don't agree with using butterfly's at all as the use of the cowstail with butterfly knots seems rather incorrect. Is a butterfly even a knot that can safely absorb a shock load. Butterfly's are for linear pulling along the free ends of the rope but to use it where the tails will be pulling directly away from the center knot doesn't make sense. A figure 8 is much better of a knot.

I like the figure 8 on bight for both end line and mid line knots. Easy to tie and easy to untie after being weighted . As for the cows tail, I have the pre made one from Petzl that is supposed to absorb shock. Only use it for crossing re belays and do not do much of that on this side of the pond.
It only takes one person to surrender a dog to a kill shelter ,but it takes many to rescue it.

I only have one cows tail. And, it has a bowline at the end.

Is your mind blown?
