caving backpack

Postby csusnir3954 » Oct 25, 2011 6:01 pm

So I am looking to buy a caving backpack, not spend then bank on it I might add. doing the basic crawling in the mudd tight holes maybe a little water involved. No climbing robes or what have you to start. Can anyone reccomend a good bag that will keep all my extra gear dry but be comfortable to lug around. I have a NorthFace Terra 45 for hiking and what not, but i think that would be a bit bulky to take into a cave. Any help is appreccitated.

If you go with a non-waterproof pack you can always get pelican cases or otterboxes, which relaly are a good idea for your sensitive stuff anyway. Or a cheaper way is empty peanut butter jars to keep things dry!

Or dry bags for less delicate items! Also, something like these if your pack works with them.

Landjoff! Durable 900g/m^2 PVC and at $35 it won't break the bank! They come in cool colors and fit Darren drums perfectly. Order today and it ships tomorrow!

Picked up one of these for caving: http://www.amazon.com/Overboard-Liters-Premium-Waterproof-Backpack/dp/B001FOQT5K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1321812640&sr=8-2 So far, I'm really happy with it and the price is right!

I love my Overboard bag for above ground vertical ($20 from Costco), but they don't last well for horizontal caving. Too many stress points, and things to snag.

Cool pack but I definitely would not want to wrestle it through a cave crawl. Straps have way too much padding and in a wet cave would probably hold a lot of water becoming heavy.

True on both counts. I snipped off all the extra straps and webbing and elastic crap. works well for my vert-pack (can carry lots of gear and rope). Can't loose for $20.
