Bulletin 69: Descriptions of Tennessee Caves

Postby Larry E. Matthews » Apr 8, 2011 9:14 pm

The State of Tennessee has again reprinted Bulletin 69: Descriptions of Tennessee Caves (1971). But...............the photo quality is rather poor.

I was down at the TN Division of Geology last week and picked up a few copies and I was rather shocked when I got them home and opened one up. The printing is fine, but the photos are very gray and washed out.

Also, Bulletin 64: Caves of Tennessee (1961) is temporarily Out-Of-Print, but they have ordered more.

Wow, hard to believe those books are now 40 and 50 years old. My how time flies.

When the photos were separated (for the initial publication), they were reduced to a series of dots. When they were re-shot for the new version, the quality would be nowhere near as good unless they had the original photos to use (remember, the original printing was way before digital).

The lower quality of the reprinted bulletin makes the value of the original that much greater.

Amy, to add to the humor of that Easegill map there were only male cavers on the trip. Ah, the Brits. Any port in a storm!
