10 Words You Need to Stop Misspelling!

Postby NZcaver » Apr 5, 2011 5:35 pm

I seldom post in the joke forum, but this one is almost worthy of posting under forum announcements.

If you don't understand the difference between lose/loose, their/they're/there, your/you're, it's/its, weather/whether, then/than - or you use the words wierd, definately, or alot - you need to read this. And if your spelling and grammar is perfect, you'll probably appreciate it even more. Every classroom should have one of these on the wall. :big grin:

The usage of lose and loose is one of my pet peeves and it seems to be a problem for more men then women. Iy happens up here a lot, too. You know who you are. :tonguecheek:

ly?

To be fair, I used to be horrible at lose and loose. But now I just remember ooooooooo is the oo sound to remember which is which. I tend to only mess them up when chatting fast in IM's.

It's brilliant! And I am using the proper usage of it's in this case, and the alien parasite looks just the Exogorth from the Empire Strikes Back on that asteroid. Yes I decided to a weird nerd and not run a jetski over a dolphin and look up what that giant space slug is actually called.

I hear it also helps with ADD. :tonguecheek:

Between Facebook and the forum, more misspelled culprits have been surfacing; e.g. to/too/two, bought/brought, allowed/aloud, advice/advise, affect/effect, principal/principle, cord/chord, who/whom, and dragged/drug (really?) A crusade is under way to rid our forum of this scourge of misused words, along with incorrect use of the apostrophe, semicolon, and i.e. in place of e.g.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the common, and cave specific rappel / repel.

Or, more properly, abseil. Strictly speaking, rappel denotes rope retrieval.

How many ways does prusik, prusick, prussik, prusic, bachmann, arbs get misspelled?

Good job, you two!

You both earn gold stars for prusik and rappel. And Marlatt gets extra credit for defining the difference between abseil and rappel. :goodjob:

Now what about carabiner and carabineer, maillon and mallion, and Petzl and Petzel..? :big grin:

Also, it seems that most cavers misspell "helictite" as helectite. It's not in most dictionaries. Remember two i-s and two e-s is the proper way.

NZ, I believe you meant to say Prusik.

Edit: Although, to cover my @ss I guess you could have been referring to the action, "to prusik", and not the actual knot.
