The September/October 2007 issue of the Tennessee Conservationist Magazine has an article titled: "Ancient Cave Art at Dunbar Cave State Natural Area". The article is on pages 24-26.
The article was written by Jan F. Simek, Joseph C. Douglas, and Amy Wallace. The photographs are by Alan Cressler. The article describes the January, 2005 discovery of prehistoric Mississippian Period art in Dunbar Cave. This would date the art to somewhere between about A.D. 1000 to A.D. 1600.
I think one of the most exciting things about this discovery is that tens of thosands of people (or more) had been in this ex-commercial cave over the years, but up until January 15, 2005, no one had discovered this ancient cave art.
Always keep you eyes open. Even in caves that have seen lots of traffic. You, too, might make an important discovery.
The single copy price for this magazine is $3.25 and I bought a copy on the 8th Floor Annex of the L&C Tower here in Nashville, TN. It may be possible to order a copy by mail.
