BELLEVUE, Ohio — The underground river at Seneca Caverns was the third-highest it’s been in 75 years this week.
“The water table has risen roughly 60 feet in the last two days. There’s a tremendous amount of water,” said Dick Bell, owner of the caverns and a geologist. “This is extremely unusual, especially for this time of year.”
Wednesday afternoon, he said the underground river level was a foot below the floor in level 3 of the caverns — or 30-35 below the surface — and was rising an average of one foot per hour. Six inches of rain fell between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.
