Spectacular Spelunking

Exploring wild caves is fascinating.
But it can be perplexing for those who don’t know where to start.

The inaugural meeting of the Red Canyon Grotto spelunking group will kick off its brand new group at 7 p.m. June 12 at Janey’s Chili Wagon Restaurant, 523 Main St.

“Our application has been accepted by the National Speleological Society,” said reporter Warren Heif-ner. “Right now, we’re just forming the club,” he said. “We’ll have a board of five people.”

The purpose of the meeting is to attract potential members by providing T-shirts, games, door prizes and a program on caving.

“There are more than 700 wild caves in Colorado that are open to people interested in caving,” Heifner said.

Participants will receive information on how to become certified, as well. The meeting is open to people all ages 6 and up.

“Part of our motto is to explore, protect and preserve,” Heifner said.

He said when he started, he didn’t know there were any wild caves in the area, but with the formation of Red Canyon Grotto, the members have adopted the Fly and Marble caves in Red Canyon Park to maintain and explore.

With the meeting, members will make plans for outings and overnight trips in the near future.

Membership fees are $5 per individual and $2 for certification classes to cover the cost of materials.

Interested people are encouraged to attend the meeting at Janey’s Chili Wagon. For more information, check the Web site at http://www.redcanyongrotto.org.
