Another sad story to share

Postby Ernie Coffman » May 2, 2007 5:54 pm

Here's a link to another sad story. 'tis not really about a cave, but about going to a cave for water; and, "cave" was mentioned a couple of times. It's a story about survival and paying to see whether you can survive in the Utah desert. It's a head-shaker for sure!

If you don't have to cut your hand off, it's not really survival.

I'm not quite sure how to respond to Wayne's comment (as I have pretty strong opinions about climbing alone...) but I feel really bad for that guys family.

I feel for the guy's family, too. Since the incident happened in Utah it reminded me of the incredible ordeal of the Colorado guy who was hiking alone in Utah and who had to cut his hand off in order to survive. That's all. That was the ultimate act of survival, to me. I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it.

You are obviously still happily married, Wayne.
There are a number of us who have had to sever an appendage to survive!

As to the incident quoted, it is both sad and was obviously a needless loss - the worst kind.
I'm sure we will hear more about this in the coming days and weeks.

The guy from Colorado made a concsious choice to solo in the canyons. He was aware of the risks. And he did survive (with inconceivable suffering) to get a book deal out of his ordeal.

The guy who's death was reported in the article was being "lead" by a commercial organization. While he did recognize the presence of risk, it would have been reasonable for him to expect the commercial group to have plans and procedures to identify and respond to an emergency.
