A new cave system found in New Zealand

Postby Ernie Coffman » Dec 6, 2012 11:10 am

Here's an article on a new cave system found on the South Island of New Zealand, that is blowing the Kiwi's away. http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news ... stone-cave
Jansen will probably want to go back home, rather than moving off to South Carolina, 'eh?

How far is Auckland from Nelson? Are they on the same island? Google hear I come. I have a friend in New Zealand, too. She's in Owhango. She was an exchange student over here in 1964. Whoops..you're a thte other end of the north island. A fair distance, I'd say.

Yep. Maybe an hour or two flying time, otherwise a day or so drive with a ferry ride.

You guys are the most traveling people, I do believe I know of. Saw your SC change on the membership, so that's why I mentioned that state. But...you're home for the holidays, I guess. Auckland is interesting and I always think of the kid that got on the airplane that got confused, somehow or other, since he indicated he was going to "Oakland," but the Kiwi stewardess, I guess, picked that up as "Auckland," which is easy to do. When I was there, we were invited to try some neat wine that was called something like "Purple Death," which my wife said, "It was!" <grin> Have a good one and enjoy home.

SC is only my paper address, and yes I'm just visiting the old country for a couple of months.

Americans in general seem incapable of pronouncing Auckland ("ork-land") so instead it comes out like Oakland.

I have an old open bottle of Purple Death here somewhere. I have no intention of finishing it personally, but I don't think US Customs will let me bring it back for you...

Interesting, interesting! On all of what you wrote, NZ. I chuckled when you wrote "visiting the old country" for it's one of the younger countries, unless you think it fits in with the European countries. Ha! Have a great time, anyway about it. Get in some of that great caving there, so you can brag about it on CaveChat. <grin>

I always thought it was "awk" land. Which, with my decidedly American accent doesn't sound too different than:

Which is perhaps more like ahk land.

Close enough. Ork and awk are the same pronunciation to a New Zealander. Just like pawn and porn, but that's a whole other story...

Try asking an Irishman the difference between "three" and "tree." He'll pronounce them exactly the same: "tree."
